Welcome
to the Bridgend Primary Schools' Cross Country Website
The league has been running for over 14 years and is designed to accommodate both fun and serious runners. Anything from between 150 - 300 runners throughout the age groups could attend a Saturday morning race meeting.
Children show great character whilst running in a mix of race conditions. They gain much from both the competitive and challenge aspects. Running for their school in a team setting is also hugely rewarding and boosts self esteem. The vast majority of pupils enjoy competing for their school regardless of what position they finish. For those teachers, pupils and parents who are new to the Cross Country League some useful information is listed below and throughout this website:
1. The league is organised by Mr Mel James who took over in season 2012-2013 from Mr R Goldsworthy (retired Acting/Deputy Head) - Mynydd Cynffig Junior School). This season (2014-15) Mr James is assisted by Mr N Clode, (Deputy Head, Llangewydd PS).
1. All races are run on selected Saturday mornings throughout the school year. (See race schedule opposite).
2. The 2014-15 season will start on Saturday October 18th at Bryntirion CS.
3. Weather permitting, there are 5/6 league meetings and 1 fun event (last race). Races are usually held at the following county borough's comprehensive schools - Coleg Y Derwen, Bryntirion, Cynffig, Pencoed, Porthcawl Comprehensive. Only in extreme weather conditions are races ever cancelled.
Schools' are notified in good time on the Friday before a race if a race meeting has to be cancelled the following day.
*You can also check this site to see if there have been any changes to the race schedule.*
4. Races are run in the following combined age categories:
Year 3/4 Boys (under 9's)
Year 3/4 Girls (under 9's)
Year 5/6 Boys (under 11's)
Year 5/6 Girls (under 11's)
5. The 1st race of the morning (usually Year 3/4 Boys) commences at 10.00 am prompt. Races are run one after the other. All 4 races are are usually completed by 10.40 am.
6. Races are run over a clearly marked (flags) course. The course is always pre-checked for any hazards.
7. Each course presents a different challenge i.e. runners must be prepared to race over a mixture of flat, undulated and graded terrain. After heavy rainfall some courses can be heavy and slippery underfoot, so, be prepared! Parents/runners are always advised to pre-check weather conditions and dress appropriately.
8. There are no limits as to how many runners are entered per school per age group. Some schools enter many runners throughout the age groups whilst others enter only a few. Several schools enter individual runners. Remember, in order for your school to score points in a race 3 runners per school must finish their particular race.
9.Scores are recorded by teaching staff on score sheets/envelopes obtained from the 'red box' prior to all 4 races. When a child finishes their race they are given a small card or ticket with a number which tells them where they were placed in the race. Teachers/Parents must record the child's name along with their final position on the score sheet and place the card in the envelope. Only 2 envelopes are needed - one for year 3/4 runners and one for year 5/6 runners. Please ensure the correct ticket goes into the correct envelope along with the correct names!
10. The winning school is the school who accumulates the most team points over a season. Individual trophies can be won in each age group. In order to contest for an end of season trophy an individual runner must have completed 4 out 6 races (fun race not included) over the season.
